The disappearence of ex-Arsenal legends!

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Don't you lot realise once someone stops playing for Arsenal they do have a life and commitments (like anyone else) they will have to honour? Or do you think once someone stops being an Arsenal player they should sit at home waiting at the clubs beck and call until they are needed to return to a club engagement or as a player, coach etc... And of course god forbid any of them entering a career in the media and daring to say anything like honest criticism of the club or team.

Smith travelled to Bulgaria in the week to interview Adams who was there to speak to a transfer target.

Wright attended but could not stay as he had to host his radio show. Life does go on once a player leaves the club

Adams has been back for games since we moved, I have met him at the stadium.

I've just been reading through the Everton programme from December 10th - the same day as the 125th anniversary 'celebrations' - and it mentions that Marc Overmars was scheduled to appear as one of the legends prior to the game. Obviously this didn't materialise, but does anyone know why?

I'm not implying that there's any problems, just curious to know if there was a reason given.

I've seen bergkamp at various games, and he is on record as saying he would love to come back to The Arsenal and work with the strikers, but not manage the team due to the stress and high profile.

the man is total class in my book , talk to any dutchman - even PSV and 'noord fans in Holland and he is a true true legend - up there with Cruyff and Van Basten.

I think also for some players, returning to Highbury is/was painful - I know smudger and spider have said as much.

imagine going back to your old work, and seeing someone younger doing your job...and for about four or fives as much, even for people like Keown and LeeLee Dixon it must pull the heartstrings not to mention grate a bit.

If he were coaching, I'd imagine that he'd do the 'Van Nistelrooy' jump over a player every time they misplace a pass.

Abou has already said that he will come back to visit us all after he hangs his boots up - so Augie there will still be plenty of opportunities to pay homage to the great man for many a decade yet :barscarf:

Haven't you noticed that our terrible start has coincided with the great man not having played all season Frank? The one fleeting glimpse we did get at home to Fulham he powered us back to level terms within minutes of taking to the field

Fuck all the 'super quality' signings if Abou gets back to full fitness, we can pair up Arteta and Wilshere deep in midfield, fuck Song off, and let the Imperious One play in his rightful Zidane role behind RvP. :barscarf: :barscarf: :barscarf:

Only thing I'm looking forward to this season

Not defending Diaby as a player as (sorry Steve-o) I dont think he is up to it but if I had suffered a leg break a couple of years ago and Barton went in on me like that I'd have done more than pinch his neck and push him to the ground. Also always wondered if Barton said something to him by the way he looks behind and then Diaby jumps up all of a sudden. Although still think if he was going to get himself sent off he should floored the little tw@t.

Going back to topic I think that with regards to the recent double winning sides/invincibles we will its a mixture between players not living in the same country anymore let alone the area like some used to and also the fact that they have only just finished playing and are looking to start new careers in coaching/media.

Very good points Rocky (well except Abou not being up to it :D ). The way I hear people blame him for that capitulation at Newcastle is embarrasing quite frankly. I mean it stands to reason doesn't it that one man's sending off should spark a 4 goal collapse against a team fielding Leon Best up front.

Did everyone miss Rosicky's little effort up there? And our wonderful back four's inability to clear the ball? Or Phil Dowd's "I'm going to give a penalty against Koscielny for jumping" decision?

Poor old Abou, copping unneccesary flak again on here

Didn't Gervinho also get sent off for brushing his fingernail against Barton's cheek? Barton is a scummy tosser - look at the way he deliberately walked off last at the Emirates the other day waving and blowing kisses, then followed that up with his latest spat against Norwich. And we're supposed to feel sorry for him getting sent off !

Some Gooners actually wanted us to sign Barton and sell Abou. I find that almost impossible to believe. A talentless, nasty, scumbag and WUM as opposed to one of the most naturally gifted players of his generation. Shocking

RossieGooner wrote:What the f@ck do people want ? These guys gave their all for the club when the wore the shirt, always state in media interviews how much they love the club. Its obvious how much Arsenal means to them. But if they aren't knocking about the place every week, or dont show for certain media events which are essentially club promotions, then some people on here feel they shouldnt be called legends or dont feel for AFC ?!!? Give them a break ffs.
Totally agree. If you've worked with a company for 10 years then moved on to work for a rival company, you wouldn't go and visit your old place of work every fortnight would you?
Adams, for example, is now out of work. If the club didn't offer him a position then that's the clubs fault. In which case why should he turn up for special occaisions? Does Herbert Chapman have any living relatives, and if so, were they invited to the uveiling of his statue?
