I ain't had a drink, swear Steveo, so this is going to be a bit restrained.
What the fuck with the Vermaelen nomination?
They guy missed practically a whole season. Has been out for massive chunks of this and in his first season with us was part of a defence that conceeded..................
wait for it.....................
42 goals.

Yeah of course it's the attacking talent where he's been short on quality... Our defence has been fantastic recently hasn't it!brazilianGOONER wrote:arteta is a great player. but agreed, wenger's signings have been well below par, specially attacking players. don't remember the last good attacker (striker or attacking mid) he bought us. i don't think nasri counts, neither does arshavin.
at least he learned to buy centrebacks (verminator and koscielny are class)

every player has, you don't become a super player because of one season, let alone half a season.flash gunner wrote:Kos still has a lot to prove IMO
but you have to agree that his performances this season are very good. in my opinion he's playing even better than vermaelen. he's our second best player this season i think.
the point with him (same for vermaelen) is that he needs to keep producing good performances. but i don't doubt his ability anymore - he IS a top defender, he just needs to put some effort and keep playing like that.

Agreed they all have to prove themselves and Kos has had a good first half of the the season not great, not excellent - good(after what i consider to be a bad first season with us). If he improves and consistantly does it for the next 5-10 seasons then i'll be happybrazilianGOONER wrote:every player has, you don't become a super player because of one season, let alone half a season.flash gunner wrote:Kos still has a lot to prove IMO

no it hasn't, but that's not because we've been doing badly in the transfer market regarding defenders, i think you miss my point.AJAAFC wrote:Yeah of course it's the attacking talent where he's been short on quality... few seasons ago we had eboue, gallas, a fat touré and clichy at the back. i think that buying sagna, vermaelen, koscielny and even mertasacker (who is a decent 3rd choice IMO) proved to be much better than the ones up front.
you are judging our defenders because of the goals we let in - that's also because we've been having extremely shite goalkeepers until now and our team does not defend as a unit, our midfielders are shit and therefore centrebacks and fullbacks are exposed most of the time.
think about this: barcelona has very few defenders, they play midfielders at the back (mascherano, busquets) and they never concede. defending is more than just having good defenders, it's about tactics as well - and we know what a great tactical mastermind wenger is

That's more like the Number 5 I know !!Number 5 wrote:I ain't had a drink, swear Steveo, so this is going to be a bit restrained.

To be fair, that is not as far fetched a statement as you are clearly making a joke about.SteveO 35 wrote:That's more like the Number 5 I know !!Number 5 wrote:I ain't had a drink, swear Steveo, so this is going to be a bit restrained.

Whilst Diaby the player hasn't really worked out for a variety of reasons, the signing its self was actually a fairly decent coup at the time. Fighting off Chelsea and Mourinho for his signature, you can't argue against that.
Wouldn't happen again in this or any future transfer window though.

Well, number 5, you said it my man. Cast your minds back to 2005/06 and there was many a top club after "our Abou" and we beat them to his signature, so we should be grateful he chose us. Not his fault that he got a terrible injury and that his gormless manager ended up playing him as a wide midfielder for 2 yearsNumber 5 wrote:To be fair, that is not as far fetched a statement as you are clearly making a joke about.SteveO 35 wrote:That's more like the Number 5 I know !!Number 5 wrote:I ain't had a drink, swear Steveo, so this is going to be a bit restrained.
