The Art of Chipping

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Interesting....

We now have 3 terms:
  • * Chip
    * Lob
    * Scoop

I do think that Theo's Swansea goal and RVP's Norwich goal are differnce types of chips. These are more one-on-one's and raising it over the floored/diving keeper. Still a chip but not in the terms a long range chip.

Bergkamp was the king of these.

A chip is where the ball is on the floor and you dig it out. Like a toe punt to lift the ball in the air. RVP tried one of these a couple of months ago but hit the post unfortunately.

A lob is where the ball is up in the air already and you just have to lift it over the keeper - i.e. Pires v Villa.

I would say a scoop is where you hold your foot under the ball, and literally scoop the ball up in a flicking motion to lift it over someone else.

I propose we add a fourth term

LOFT

a sort of lazy near effortless looking strike that send the ball very high and far but ends up in the goal.

Always thought a Chip had to go over an upright keeper, a goal scored over a diving keeper, (Walcott at Swansea) is a clip...

Wrighty's chip against Lukic/Leeds around 95/96 was class. Proper dug it out at what seemed to be an impossible angle and John didn't move. The look on his face was priceless.
