Stoke Away travel and pubs

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Cos some people just want to go their own way and have a few beers............................

All this talk about colours and Stoke fans?? Grow a pair of balls people, trouble outside grounds stopped 20 years ago.
Really!!! Have you been to many away matches then?

Man city away a couple of seasons ago springs to mind as their was quite a bit of agro afterwards when we trounced em 3-0 and even Barry Bendtner managed to score, which really riled them up (dont blame em, the shame of it all). After the game outside the ground I saw a lad who could have only been 16-17 get one planted on his jaw by a 40 something year old man, for no apparent reason, and right in front of a copper too. Bottles thrown at a group of gooners, and stones thrown at cars. And then their was the 2 delightful gentlemen who actually decided to go out of their way to cross the road and come over to me to tell me they were gonna cut my throat and rape my girlfriend (who was standing right next to me). Delightful; Luckily my 2 friends Mr Stella and Mr Artios had something to say about that. :box:

Im pretty sure everyone else on this forum who’s been to away days has similar stories. Brummies at the CC final anybody?

Anyway as it happens Ive been to Stoke away once but was sat in the home kop end (guest of my in-law whos a potter). I can honestly saw I didn’t open my mouth once during the game as I was basically shit scared. I heard idle threats that they were “gonna stab a cockney bastard” about every 30 seconds. I thought it wise not to say hello to anyone cockney style. “alriiite geeezar”................. *crack* . The potters hate us even more then we hate then. Trust me. Something about us robbing them in the cup, twice, in the 70’s.

Anyway point of the stories are that some away games its probably just best to go in camo gear and blend in with the natives. henry llyod, Stone island, Kappa if in Liverpool etc. I would count Stoke as one of those games really. You’ll thank yourself on the day.

Yup, quite lively away game, l was told on numerous occasions to 'not go in the town centre', anyway walking back from the ground last year ( l was walking with the home fans alone), a guy in a wheelchair applauding and generally celebrating Shawcross breaking Aaron's leg a while ago................

Traveling for the first time with Arsenal Away coaches on sunday.

As a non-member, what do I need to bring with me to enter the bus?

Away games have their aggro if you look for it. If someone has a go you have a go back and they will generally shit themselves. Teams who hate us big-style however - Stoke, Brum, Spurs (obviously), City, West Ham, Villa. I suggest that anyone going to Stoke take a metal boomerang with the corners sharpened into razor sharp points, potatoes with razor blades stuck into them and an armchair. All can be thrown in to the away end when we score.

Other than a print out of your travel confirmation, I'd suggest a crossword book, some egg sandwiches and maybe some knitting. You'll fit right in then. Oh and maybe a sleeping bag, because the coaches will go via Aberdeen, you'll get home by 4am if you're lucky

I've done the coaches twice I think, literally the worst possible way to travel. Never again!

Thanks for reply with the email thing.

The other sounds ************* shit. I´m not gonna judge it until I´ve tried it though.

Generally wouldn't choose to but I guess maevans "pre-designated dump of a pub" remark covers that question.
Hah - you put it well.

Few reason's:

- I prefer a nice pub with nice beer to a bloody student union essentially!

- If I'm arriving early it's nice to catch up with friends for a bit over some decent beer and a bit of grub before livening later

- Petty as it is, I strongly dislike being herded off anywhere by the police without any say so, purely because I'm a football fan - it's a free country, I'll make the decision about where I eat/drink on a Match day.

- Pretetious as it is - I like to see a bit of local colour - I find it depressing when all I know about a town is it's student union and whatever industrial estate the stadium's on.

And the clincher: I really bloody like Titanic Brewery beers. :barscarf:

My wife is from a town next to stoke called Newcastle under-Lyme. It's literally a couple of mile from the stadium. If your getting the train I would recommend a taxi in to Newcastle for a small fortune - around £5 , plenty of pubs and you won't be refused entry on any as mainly port vale fans are based there.

Hope this is helpful :D
