Greatest Missed Penalties

Without doubt one of the most traumatic moments of my life. Between that night at Vilal Park and the game at Elland Road in the league that was a horrible few weeks. Devastating stuff even to this day.

The Bergkamp miss at Villa Park in injury time changed history just like VanHorsefaces miss in 2003.If he scores no Giggs goal no treble. And we would almost certainly have gone on to win the double as it would have knocked the stuffing out of Man Utd

Was in Brussels in 1980 when Kempes missed their first penalty then Brady missed the next one

And why did Winterburn take the pen v Luton? His first and last penalty for us

Feel the exact same way. And four years later, just when those memories were starting to fade, boom, up pops a 2-2 draw at Bolton in very similar circumstances to the Elland Road match (we dropped points away right at the end of the season and lost control of the title).

In saying that though, there were obviously many great days to counter-balance these. More than anything else though, I miss the 'big match feel' we used to have going into games. I used to look forward to games all week, as they meant so much. I honestly can't remember the last time this happened. The final game of the 2011/12 season at WBA was crucial, but I wasn't particularly excited - after all, the only reward was coming fourth. I'd probably go back so far as the Man Utd CL games in 2009 maybe?

I remember my dad going out of the room when Rix took his penalty against Valencia in 1980 the stress was just too much for him to bare.... Also i remember the devastation on his face when he came back in to realise the penalty had been missed  I was 8 at the time and had been allowed to stay up and watch the game. With the FA Cup final a few days before it was a bad week or so

McClairs at Highbury in '88 is a favourite and it probably was the catalyst for years of ill feeling. We hated them , they hated us and that's how it should be .Now we are submissive and afraid of them, we sold them our best player and our worst player asked him for his shirt at half time. If people believe that it is no big deal , well it's what it represented in front of a world wide audience.
Anyway that's not the subject..Bergkamp's in '99 Cup semi-final was probably the worst in our history, certainly in terms of where both clubs went immediately after. They would have won fuck all and we wouldn't still be hearing that fucking song.
Requilme's in '06, was celebrated more than most goals. Winterburn in '88 League Cup semi, heard a theory that if he had scored we would have won and therefore wouldn't have had the pain of that defeat to drive us on the following season. Not sure about that.
Brady and Rix in 1980 ECWC Final was a sickener , so soon after losing FA Cup Final to West Ham.
In 1977 I tore up a copy of SHOOT with Alan Ball in it because he missed a pen against QPR in a League Cup Quarter Final.

That's a great one. Don't remember the incident myself, but feel sure I'd have reacted in a similar way.

Seems that most of you prefer to concentrate on the penalties WE'VE missed rather than those missed against us. What an odd bunch you are! :? :D

Just looked up that game, it was played on December 1st 1976, it is quiet possible that this was one of Alan Ball's last games for Arsenal as Alan Hudson joined early that December and Ball moved to Southampton the same week. The four quarter finals were played that night including a 3-0 win for Everton at Old Trafford. Villa played Everton in the final winning after a replay. On that night (December 1st ) as I was ripping up my magazine guess who was bottom of the league and were subsequently relegated ??? :D

There are loads of missed pens that are sore, one of my first memories as a gooner was Rix missing his against Valencia in 1980  Dennis missing in the semi in 99 was a kick in the guts especially with what happened afterwards :banghead: but enough about the misses for us. McClair's miss for manure at Highbury i think in about 86 was nice 8) Van Horseface at Ot in 2003 8) Scholes in the final in 05 :barscarf: and the one above that Keane missed at the bowl :barscarf:

Those two for me to in terms of the celebrations that followed. Esp Graham Roberts at WHL....!

In terms of those missed by us....has to be Dennis at Villa Park against United. It wasn't just that it would have ended their treble before it began, but it also ended what was shaping up as a double for us!! I don't think anyone doubts that if we'd have won that game we'd have also gone on to win the title.

Other than that then I'd have to go back to the CWC Final in 1980.... Think it might have been Rix who missed, but that might be wrong and it may have been more than just him anyway. I just remember the mayhem that followed :box: !!

Brady actually missed his, which left young Rixy needing to score to keep us in it.. he didn't. :(

Just read the article in the Gooner, well done Mike1,

I was there for the McClair miss and was ecstatic at the time as it looked like they would claw an undeserved draw from a game that we bossed.
