Usually seemed to be half a second off the pace when he came to us, ankle problems could legitimately explain that.

Have to be honest and say I never really got what all the fuss was about tbh. He was a good-ish striker that did well at Everton (and had a few exceptional games) but when we signed him I was very "meh" about it. Nothing against him personally but I honestly never thought he had the touch, the footballing brain or speed of thought and feet to interact in the box with the likes of Henry, Bergkamp, Pires or Freddie.

Then he turned out to be a glass legged forerunner for Diaby...

His goals to games ratio at Everton was rermarkable, i think it was something like 17 in 14 games the season before we signed him. There was a hint of what was to come though in those stats and I don't mean the no of goals.
My worry was always his injuries, though in hindsight those stats did flatter him and he turned out to be shite
