Re: Champions League Qualifying Round 2013
Unfortunately JD unlike the American school system football isn't about "Grade Point Averages" - it's about winning things (especially knockout competitions). Even our club doesn't post our average league finish or consecutive top 4 finishes on the hoardings in between tiers - they show the trophies we've won.
Over the period of Wenger's reign we've probably picked up about as many co-efficient points as AC Milan due to their non-participation for a few seasons - who gives a fuck about coefficient points though beyond seeding ramifications??? They've actually won the thing twice and come runners-up once in that time, and suggesting that this is even fractionally offset by the fact we qualified for 3 seasons that they didn't just for the sake of being pedantic is frankly sad.

nobody disputes that AC Milan have out performed us in the CL, by any metric.
But we're nonetheles seeded for a reason - we're one of the eight most consistent sides.

I know it's WengerSpeak but we are pretty consistent and I'm actually proud of that

Perhaps Wenger is saving our money to influence a few people at CAS in the event that we go tumbling out of the fucking competition!!swimmer1 wrote:Does anyone know what chances Fener have with there appeal ?LeftfootlegendGooner wrote:SSN

Not by the metric of consistent qualification/participation - which is what you're relying on to champion our record as it's about all we have to go on.highburyJD wrote:nobody disputes that AC Milan have out performed us in the CL, by any metric.

As far as I'm concerned it's a cup competition and our record is therefore worse than any club who has won it in the last 16 years, and at best equal to any other runners-up (given that we've only made the semi-final stage on one other occasion).
Re: Champions League Qualifying Round 2013
I believe even if they knock us out and then fail their appeal, Bursaspor take their place in the groups not us. Could be wrong but that's what i've read.franksav63 wrote:Perhaps Wenger is saving our money to influence a few people at CAS in the event that we go tumbling out of the fucking competition!!swimmer1 wrote:Does anyone know what chances Fener have with there appeal ?LeftfootlegendGooner wrote:SSN

So by the same logic, Schalke should now play Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk instead of getting a by to the groups. But this is UEFA so fuck knows, they'll probably just make it up as they go along...

Re: Champions League Qualifying Round 2013
If UEFA instituted Dnipro in place of Metalist you can bet PAOK would kick up a fuss (having been knocked out by Metalist in the 3rd qualifying round). Just like if we lost to Fenerbahce and then they were kicked out we would damn sure complain about Bursaspor first of all not meeting the domestic qualifying requirements and then going straight into the group stages without playing the two qualifying rounds - and a legal appeal would undoubtedly be lodged.Dan_85 wrote:I believe even if they knock us out and then fail their appeal, Bursaspor take their place in the groups not us. Typical UEFA mess.

Easy way out the two teams Fenerbahce (if banned) ko'ed Arsenal and I think it was a Norwegien the round before play off in a one off game simples .northbank123 wrote:If UEFA instituted Dnipro in place of Metalist you can bet PAOK would kick up a fuss (having been knocked out by Metalist in the 3rd qualifying round). Re: Champions League Qualifying Round 2013
Again - the argument would be that the Norwegian team were therefore given a bye against Fenerbahce, but Arsenal weren't. And if you're going to expunge their results back to 3rd qualifying round, it could be argued that a) the play-off should take place even if Arsenal beat Fenerbahce and UEFA win in court, or b) that the results should be expunged back one round further to the domestic qualification and Bursaspor should have the right to at least take their place in the qualifying round.swimmer1 wrote: Easy way out the two teams Fenerbahce (if banned) ko'ed Arsenal and I think it was a Norwegien the round before play off in a one off game simples .
There's problems with when an extra match would be scheduled - apart from all the regulations and admin, there's an international break straight after the court hearing and then one league game before Matchday 1.
In reality if this did happen UEFA would just put Arsenal through - aside from being the easiest solution it's in their interests to have the big clubs in there (particularly if the draw was conducted with Fenerbahce in it and we would therefore assume 2nd/3rd seed place).

BBC reports:
Arsenal's Champions League play-off opponents Fenerbahce were banned from competing in Europe in June for their involvement in domestic match-fixing but have appealed to Cas.
Cas says a final decision in that case will be made by 28 August, after the second leg of the play-off, but Uefa says no decision has yet been made regarding what would happen if Fenerbahce won the tie and lost their appeal.

They should let us through because we are a poster child for FFP

Re: Champions League Qualifying Round 2013
Hi,
Schalke will play against PAOK Saloniki which have lost in the third round against Metalist Charkiw.
http://www.uefa.com/uefa/disciplinary/n ... 81184.html
But Charkiw can and will still call the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport). What a mess! Uefa have decided that before the competition starts, means even before the first round
Cheers,
Thomas

Re: Champions League Qualifying Round 2013
Makes sense. By analogy that means they'll stick us through if we lose and Fenerbahce lose in court (wonder if our celebrations outside the court room would be reminiscent of the St James' Park champagne event in May?)
