I was thinking the same, lets just hope its not the usual with our medical team and hes out for 3 months.

Have a feeling next time Jenko gets a run of games he will struggle.

Rumours of stalling on a new contract? Corporal Jenkinson not up to it at the moment. Need Sagna to sign or will definitely need a new RB.

jenkinson is not good enough that is certain. sagna should get a new contract of 2-3 years.

Sagna is playing great this season and Jenkinson is useless. I will never understand why we hand shite like Jenkinson a long contract and quality like Sagna only gets offered one year.
Its a joke.

Exactly what will happen and bloody ridiculous. The bloke is easily young enough and fit enough to merit a 2 year deal and is still streets ahead of Jenkinson.

I wouldn't call him useless,as I recall he was part of the same team that started of last season with a solid display of team defending, whilst Sagna was injured.

The same type of display that's earned dgood clean sheets against top opposition this season. He has mistakes in him the way most young defenders have in them. I still think he will turn out ok. This isn't because he is a gooner but because when he has had a run in the team,he's done alright.

In no particular order the following players have been called useless by us fans: the BFG,Kos,Rambo,Giroud,Walnutt even Jack by some on here.

None of them are world class even if Rambo is starting to tap gently on that door but as a unit contribute a lot to the team when they are in it, especially when you combine them with 2 or 3 sprinklings of World class fairy dust like an Ozil.

topgoon it's true people have called those players useless but you can't conveniently fail to mention the fact that they were playing at a far lower level at the time. "Useless" may not ever have been fair in some cases but since they upped their game nobody has been calling the likes of Ramsey, Giroud or the CBs useless.

Jenkinson is probably borderline good enough imo to cover the RB slot but strip away the admiration for him because he's a genuine Gooner and he is not anywhere near good enough to be first choice for a CL club hoping to challenge for the title. I know he did well at the start of last season and you'd hope to see an improvement if he got a fair run in the side but I'm not convinced he's a PL player full-stop atm.

The most important thing in a full-back is reliability and consistency and with that awful patch behind him Sagna offers us that. Even if we were to sign a replacement the chance of us actually getting a better performer than him there is very small imo and it would be a stupid gamble to take.

Given how much our system relies on our full backs to provide the width and almost exclusively the crosses, I think the full back positions are one of the most vital to get right in the near future. I have no problem with Sagna having a 2 year deal, he certainly merits it, but also think we should be looking for a far better calibre of player than Jenkinson to be the successor, be it next season or whenever.

agree about Jenkinson - people will say yeah give him a chance etc etc but I don't ever see him as starting material.

I think that our full-backs in the past have done far too much getting forward. I've said this on a number of occasions but watching Podolski playing at left wing-back so that Gibbs could bomb forward and scuff a cross at the first man was a waste last season, not to mention the defensive liability it causes. Even Dortmund at home this year it was ridiculous that Sagna was 20 yards off Lewandowski for the winner, even though the latter dropped back deep into his own half to start the move. Imo our full-backs need to be less cavalier than in the past and whilst having some that could cross a football would certainly be beneficial, it's not a priority for me in the grand scheme of things.

It is important to get full-backs right as with any position, because at the top level even one weak link will cost you big time over the course of a season. But one of the most vital? Not for me, certainly when you compare the benefit of bringing in a great full-back to the benefit of bringing in a world class striker.

What I was trying to emphasise (and probably didn't do very well) is that it the system we play that makes the full backs vital.
I agree it is sheer madness to have both in the opposition third of the pitch at the same time, 9as per the scouser who did an analysis of our attacking play) leaving us criminally open to a swift counter attack - but that is how we currently operate.

So we either amend it, and make them defend first, and put less emphasis on them bombing forward, or we get full backs that can actually beat a man and cross a decent ball in (making the attack less likely to break down) but still have the gumption to get back as soon as our attack falters or switches flanks etc.

Yes they played at a lower level but how can that not be leveled at Jenkinson, was Sagna a rock solid FB at 19, doubt it. My point is not much different from yours, I think he is a good back up, but a lot want him discarded, which I think is too early. He is no worse than one or two other FB's in the premier league. I have said it in the past on hear that he would benefit form being loaned out to a champ team where we we can recall him. A team where he will be selected for every game. One that plays it on the ground like a Donnie Rovers/Barnsley or Watford.
You are forgetting he got a decent run in the team last year and did ok, not world beating, commited the odd mistake but not career ending.

Walker's a case in point, he is very good going forward but dodgy at the back and frequently uses his pace to get him out of scrapes. He benefitted from being loaned out by the Vermin and looks better(still not great) from being in front of a more solid unit. Jenko does well when the rest of our backline does well but being the youngest of the lot, when we f**k around and look shaky so does he...more so.

I'm probably rambling now, but my point is I'm not unhappy we gave him a contract, just a bit f**ked off we still won't retain experienced pros in the tem and fob them off with contract negotiations till they run them down and we have to sell them to rivals . :banghead:
