Arsene Wenger gives Mathieu Flamini a dressing down over torn shirt

Arsène Wenger gave one of his players a public dressing-down in a bizarre ending to a night that saw Jack Wilshere's two goals put Arsenal on the brink of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Arsenal, with four wins from their five group games, will go through if they avoid losing by three goals or more against Napoli at Stadio San Paolo on 11 December, but Wenger was unhappy with Mathieu Flamini.

The French midfielder has developed a habit of taking a pair of scissors to his shirt to turn it into a short-sleeved top. Flamini had been involved in a row with the kitman, Vic Akers, before and after his last game, when he did the same against Manchester United, and this time Wenger made it clear he considers it a breach of club rules. "I do not like that and he will not do that again," he said. "I was surprised he did that; we don't want that."

Arsenal's rule is that the players must all wear the same shirt and that it is selected before every game by the captain. However, an odd finale to an otherwise satisfactory night took another twist when Flamini indicated he would continue defying his manager. "I've been playing at the top level for 10 years," he said. "I like to wear short sleeves, that's what I like to do."

Olivier Giroud also had short sleeves, though in his case he had rolled them up rather than snipped them off, on a night when Wilshere scored as many goals as he has previously managed in an entire season.

The first came after only 33 seconds, from a player who had scored only seven times in his previous 115 Arsenal games. "I've never scored four goals in a season before. I've set myself a target of 10 and hopefully I can reach that."

The "Same sleeve" tradition is one I do not care about.
As long as players give 100% I could not care less what sleeves they have.

It's a tradition I absolutely love. It made our jersey more like a uniform that you wear proudly into battle. It's all part of that "different class" thing we used to do so well. 8)

Flamoney may be putting in a decent shift on the pitch but he is an arsehole.

And Quartz, I would say that the two are not mutually exclusive. We should expect both class and tradition from our club as well as effort on the pitch from our players. Fuck yeah. 8)

I wonder what the reaction would be if Diaby had turned up with cut down sleeves - send him to the gallows no doubt

Because its our three month legend involved there seems to be some tolerance around (except from DB10 !)

In fairness though SteveO, Diaby would probably do himself with the scissors!

Breaking News...Diaby is fit but all his shirts are cut up so he can't play in Cardiff....The shirt sleeves tradition is one I also like, it's the captain's call and as such should be respected.

Putting the club traditions to one side for a moment the thing nobody seems to be picking up here is the fact he is doing it against the club/managers wishes, it is also showing a total lack of respect to the captain who's decides what length sleeves to wear on match days.
Whether you think it's a storm in a tea cup or not, you cannot allow any player to just disregard the rules and do as he
pleases.
I'm with DB10 on this one, however good Flamini has been this season he is acting like a spoilt brat or arsehole as he so aptly puts it not a professional footballer.

i see giroud rolled up his sleeves yesterday, is that something acceptable? i mean, historically, have players done that or do they keep the sleeves at normal length?

'cause even if it's such a major problem for flamini to wear long sleeves (and i can't for the life of me figure out why) then surely he could simply roll them up?

I don't mind them rolling up their sleeves. Sometimes it's just habit anyway.

I think they look smart walking out onto the pitch, as a team, wearing the same length sleeves.
They'd look scruffy if they were mixing sleeve lengths. I know that doesn't matter to some people but it does to me.
Flamini looks even worse because his sleeves are obviously cut, he'd just hacked at them as if to say 'Fuck you, I'll do what I want'. It's incredibly disrespectful to the captain, the manager and the kit man.

Since fcuking when ? You have collected so many splinters in your arse sitting on milans bench for the last few years, that yogi bear is considering setting up home there

Apart from his attitude being disrespectful to our club and captain, it is also an attitude way above his standing/quality  He does a job that is far from a skill (running around like a demented dog snapping at the opposition) - yes I agree t6hat he brings something to the table that we didnt previously have, but that is more about the level of neglect from the manager than any specialised skill set that the mercenary c*nt brings with him
