In fact, based on the equivalent fixtures to our first 25 this season, we were doing better last year than this year!

really ? - got a list ?

that would be a very real comparison for the mythical and mystic "progress"......
Correction, we achieved 4 points.

Man Utd (H) - 1 point
Sunderland (H) - 1 point
Stoke (A) - 1 point
Swansea (H) - 0 points
Tottenham (A) - 0 points
Chelsea (A) - 0 points
Man City (H) - 0 points
Everton (A) - 1 point
That is actually quite scary when you see it like that! The only differences now might be wins against Sunderland and Swansea, and possibly Manure or the scum (large portion of maybe!). Otherwise it's frightening!

Just did the calculation - discounting fixtures against promoted teams, we have played 20 like-to-like fixtures to last season.

We've gained 40 points from those 20 fixtures this season, and gained 42 points from those equivalent fixtures last season.

Quirk of the fixture list put us top? Next 8 games will tell us a lot about whether or not we've improved..because as it stands, we've gone backwards.

1 red card
WENGER flaps his arms so aggressively that he takes off, to the dark side of the moon and never returns. Amen.

Not having a pop at anyone in particular here but comparing stats regarding last season's fixtures with this season's fixtures is an exercise in the ridiculous that Wenger would be crucified for on here if he tried it...

To make the comparison work in any conceivable way (and it still wouldn't!) you would have to account for all the variables involved. So you'd have to play the fixtures in the same order, same time of year, same time of day/night, same weather conditions, with the same 22 players, same substitutions at the same times, same ref, same linesmen, all players at the same stages of fitness/form, coming off the back of the same set of results, with the same mindsets, same domestic situations regarding wives girlfriends and kids, the same everyfucking thing and even THEN you could not say it would be relevent!!

Did Liverpool stuff us 5-1 last season? No? Why not? Why did they do so this season? Different set of circumstances?

Spot on mate, this place is hitting new lows of negativity if we are dragging stats up like that to try and justify the "we are going backwards" mantra.

Anyhow let's win tonight please please please :barscarf:

I agree with the concept of what both of you are saying, but then how are people allowed to state that we have improved from last season then ? Our performances have frequently been poor and in a lot of games we have scraped wins more than anything else so, if our points comparison is worse than last year, on what basis are we saying that we have improved ? :? On a personal level I would have thought that we have improved but if the performances havent improved and the points comparison is actually worse, then I dont know what I am basically my perception on

As has already been said, making direct comparisons with the corresponding fixtures last season is a fruitless exercise because of all the variables involved. If we look at where we were at the corresponding stage of the season this time last year I think we get a better picture.

In 2012/13 we were 5th, 21 points behind the leaders, with a record of p 26 W 12 D 8 L 6

In 2013/14 we are 2nd, 2 points behind the leaders, with a record of p 25 W 17 D 4 L 4

So in summary, we've won more, drawn less, lost less and have 11 more points that at this stage last season, having played a game less.

This is probably why people have a 'perception' that we've improved. For the record, May City and Chelsea are also better off than last season.

Either way, I'm enjoying the ride, even if it is about to get a little bit hairy.

It started with us losing pretty much every big game we faced, it’s now turned into us getting hammered in most of those games. Conceding 8 at United, 6 at City and 5 going on 15 the other day is totally unacceptable and wouldn’t be tolerated in any other club in the world bar Arsene FC.

It’s about time that the players and manger grew a pair, manned the f up and put the worst united team in living memory to the sword. They are absolute toilet but if we get the same limp fisted, tippy tappy approach that we normally do when facing the big guns we will be beaten again tonight and the spiral of failure that engulfs the club will ever widen.

COME ON YOU GUNNERS :barscarf:
