Previous tiny totts v Arsenal matches

Post by StuartL »

Imagine there are quite a few with tales to tell of league games gone past at the shit hole......

1971 and a title claimed, with thousands of gooners on the pitch at the end and 50,000 odd locked out !!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... dALY2fLvq4

My first derby away was the 3-2 victory in 1988 / 89 season :D http://ri.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=A2KLqIo ... qAxIykvxU-

Loved the last minute Wrighty goal back in 1993, must have been one of the only decent things Mc Goldrick did (took the corner)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... 4tqW1WkftE

This was also a very worthy goal by Kanuuuuuuuuuu

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... oV2FfnzvhY

Another title won at the shithole back in 2002 http://ri.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=A2KLqIg ... 1ubHdxN.Q-

Loved this goal from young Cesc, but Motson's commentary is so annoying

So ladies and gents, your memories and recollections to share with the class please.

Despite our near-decade unbeaten record against them, Wenger has only won there 3 times in 17 league visits which is dreadful given we've finished above them every season. This is a great chance to atone for some woeful recent no-shows there. 2 points in our last 5 visits is piss-poor, and the last 4 games have been spineless performances on our part.

We have a fucking annoying habit of giving away late goals there. 2002 (Wright error for Poyet in 1-1), 2004 (Lehmann brainfart for 2-2 equaliser), 2007 (probably the worst for me even though it was an end-of-season dead rubber 2-2 because of the way our players were going through the motions in a NLD at 2-1).

The 5-4 in 2004/05 was a really weird game of football, it was the quality of the Invincibles mixed with the fragility and woeful defending that came to sum us up years later.

I was there in the 4-5 game, absolute magic. Best part was how their fans would get their hopes up and then we go the other end and dash them again...and...and again. Will never forget the way Lauren stuck the penalty away and his subsequent celebration, pure passion. Fucking legend. Was wondering why a few our players where getting involved in handbags with theirs during the celebrations, then after watching the game again later when I got home, turned out that Paul Robinson smashed the ball into Reyes' head in frustration for conceding the pen, the fat c*nt.

Ian Allisons semi final goal in 87 - in the replay at theirs.

I was in a Wansted pub having sunday lunch with some of West Hams ice cream lads, and when we came back to 1-1 for the 2nd time, they got well interested, someone shouted 'come on Arsenal' and there were a few 'faaack orf" s but when we took the lead the place went mental - beer thrown, people jumping up n down the lot.

When the whistle blew, the whole place went up and the anti spuds songs came out.

I only realised then that true whammers see the spuds as their rivals and hate them 2nd only to millwall.

The clip runs for 22 minutes but it's well worth watching if you have time. 1-0 up in the first minute and it was all over. Another 4 goals followed without reply.

And if anyone is unaware or unsure of how good a player Chippy Brady was, FFwd to around 14 mins 50 secs for a piece of Arsenal folklore.

I'm somewhere in that cage behind the goal. I've witnessed many great days out at the swamp since then - but this was my first NLD away.

71 was my first time at WHL had to drag my dad out of work at 1 pm and then get let in the que by a schoolfriend just b4 2 pm . The que stetched down past Bruce grove even then !
They opened the ground up early about 4.30 and by 5.30/6 it was full ,then gooners jumped in the main stand and there were many scuffles as spuds tried to get into their allocated seats without succsess, this was repeated in the Paxton and Park lane seats too.
There were precious few cops around because they were all outside trying control and then to push away the thousands outside who were all Arsenal too .
The only part of the ground with them in it in was the small bit above what is the shelf as it couldnt be climbed into from the terraces !

Been there more times than Id like ,i hate the place an all thats in it !

Many visits over the years

First one I think was around 87 or 88, we won 2-1 but I was stuck in a big queue outside and missed all three goals, they had one disallowed in injury time.

I was stuck outside for the 87 semi having failed to get a ticket off a tout, didnt know the result until I got home.

A 1-0 defeat in the game where Alf Buksh had an absolute nightmare, I think Wrighty might have punched Howells in the face during the game, I was in the home end, horrible experience, never again.

Dennis's first season, where we played sublime football for the first 30 minutes but ended up losing.

There was a 0-0 where Lukic had to play because of injury and made some incredible saves.

It might have been after this game that I saw a spurs fan hit a guy in an Arsenal shirt who was in a wheelchair, they really are a lovely bunch.

The Kanu goal in 99, that was a fantastic night, we were neck and neck with Man United who were 2-0 up on Liverpool and the spuds were giving us hell even though we were battering them - Then Liverpool equalised in the last minute and the away end went mental, I was convinced the league was ours that night :(

Sol's return in 2001 was an incredible atmosphere, so much anger and hate and their rather pathetic supposed three minutes silence which failed miserably.

Of course 2004 is hard to be bettered, the idiocy of the police who decided to block the road to the away end off so we had to walk the entire way round the stadium to get to our seats, very sensible. Our football in the first half was different class, the second goal remains one of my favourite ever Arsenal goals. Whilst it was annoying that they equalised it was almost worth it given so many of them were celebrating thinking it had stopped us winning the title.

I left the Pins to go to the game just as Newcastle equalised against Chelsea, I've never heard a noise like it, I really thought a bomb had gone off

Player celebrations after were great, Cashley leaving an inflatable premiership trophy on the centre circle, '71, we've done it again'

Back to the Pins for all night celebrations

you're right Herd it must of been the 2nd leg - mind is going obviously, Allen scored first in all three games i think.

it was the Fleece on the flats. the lads i knew were Walker, chambo, Fred, beagles etc. i met them in Spain and one of their mates dated my older sister. they were already well out of it by then ( at 21-22 lol)

beagles was the first person i ever knew who had taken E. allegedly a bunch of Manor Park took a coach tour up to FAC 51 in 82. (RIP Tony).

1987

The second leg, Sunday afternoon.
Scariest moment of my life.
Packed into cages in the away end, police looking on as we became more crushed, people's feet off the ground, came very close to a Hillsborough situation.

1987

Replay.
Midweek evening game.
Was right at the front, same end, face literally poking through gap in the metal fence.
Ian Allinson missed a chance late on, he ran off the pitch towards the fence right in front of me as his momentum carried him forward.
I shouted "You're shit Allinson!"
Not proud of it now, not at all, but was a teenager then.
Soon after he scored.
I went wild, climbed the fence at the end of the game but did not go onto the pitch, just wanted a good vantage point to look at the mass of our celebrating fans.
Saw a copper hit one of ours who had got onto the pitch.

Walking out the ground the traffic was at a standstill, found myself next to a Rolls Royce full of Spurs fans.
In the back was a kid from my school, nice guy, not cocky, genuine football fan.
I knocked on the window to have a chat but he blanked me.
So I waved my scarf across the windscreen and shouted something.

Next day at school I asked him why he ignored me.
He said he had no idea it was me, he was terrified, thought the car was going to get smashed up!

When was the year that the pitch was frozen :?

Remember the ball bouncing very high over their goalie and we won with a high score- think it was in the early 90s sometime :?

it may even have been at Highbury, just remember that goal as the keeper wasnt anticipating the ball bouncing so high

Ralph's penalty, I remember thinking when he stepped up to take it "why is he fucking taking the penalty" great result in a crucial game.

Winning the League there in 2004 was just fantastic. Hearing and reading the stories of '71 and then doing it again was pure bliss. I remember winning there in 1993, with that Wrighty header in front of their fans right near the end was great as was winning there in 1988/89, equalizing in stoppage time in 1993 and 2000,, smashing them in 2007 in the league and coming back from 2 down in the league cup semi. In fact, beating them any time is great, especially when they've been all lippy and we've just been head and shoulders above them.

Anyone remember when we lost 2-1 there early in the 89/90 season? We were reigning champions yet the defeat meant Harry Harris in the Mirror and a lot of Tottenham fans declared themselves as London's no.1 club  F*cking ridiculous. It was like the Scots declaring themselves as World Champions after beating England at Wembley in 1967.

That 1999 game Remi mentions (with the Kanu goal) I was at Highbury with thousands of others watching on the big screen and the atmosphere was electric. In a surreal way, it was one of the best nights I ever experienced at Highbury. I'm sure that would have gone down as a legendary occasion if we'd won the league that season.

Harry Harris...........bloody hell, there's a name I haven't heard in a while. I can still picture the little headshot they used to have of him next to all his stories.

'99 was awesome - The ground emptied when Kanu scored on 85, but they were all waiting for us outside....

I first went there in January 95, I think, when they had Klinnsmann, Popescu, Dumitrescu etc. Lost 0-1, Popescus scored in the first half, was the coldest game I had ever been to up to that point.

I haven't missed an NLD for about 19 seasons I think, but had to scramble and call in a favour for a ticket for Sunday - last one I missed was a 1-1, when Ray Parlour equalised after a big deflection - was during the redevelopment of WHL so we only got 800 tickets or something ridiculous.
