Great result but the easiest way to sum it up for Augie would be to think of Arsenal v (any shit well organised team scrapping for a point).

Oh and Arsenal does not= Oireland.

Oireland were muck. Utter dogshit. It was a smash and grab really. Germany have a major world cup hangover. But fuck it, it was a game everyone expected us to get molested to death in, so a point away is a good result. Still can't get excited about it though, Interlull football just bores me to tears.

Agree with BWK about the RTE panel; they called it like it was. Can you imagine the arseholes that do the punditry for Ingerland games on the Beeb and Sky saying what Dunphy and Giles and Chippy say?!

You Ingerlish and your fake politeness.

It has started already..people are entitled to their opinions, that is what we are doing here , but one of the main gripes Irish people have about English pundits commenting on England games is that they are not realists. We see them as building up England as potential winners of every tournament they qualify for with little substance in their optimism. Yet we have three pundits, definitely three narky fuckers, that call football as they see it and because they don't buy into glorious failure or don't see means as justifying ends they are castigated.

Was chuffed with the result, with a big Derry connection in the team tonight, Mc Clean and Forde both ex Derry City players, Gibson another Derry lad and of course Martin O Neill. :barscarf: :barscarf:

I'll put it to you another way mate.

There's nothing easier than moaning about your team.

Proof: Here.

The English pundits are mostly wankers, so that's against them in the first place. :D

Secondly, the expectation before the world cup could not have been any lower, so I think you're wrong with your first contention. In the past, some may havegone over the top but people want to believe they're going to do well when everything tells them how umlikely it is (Chelsea v Arsenal thread) - and let's be honest, England have had sides that contained some really good players in European terms (2004).

I think in general it's very easy and is likely to happen very quickly that people latch on to a perceived "over expectation" when in reality it's not, or is at the most a sign of a country who's national sport is football, has 92 odd professional clubs, a myriad of non-league clubs and interest in even the flicker of life ready to explode.

The highest number since Herbert Chapman days :barscarf:

Not saying anything about the quality of the teams of course
I didn't think he lived until 1988!
We did'nt have 5 arsenal players on the pitch at the same time in 88 we had 4 in the 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia
Thomas Adams rocastle started smith came on in the 68 th min
Marwood came on in the 80 th but Thomas went off
Adams scored England's goal

V Saudi Arabia ? I see, Seaman, Thomas, Rocastle started, Marwood & Smith on as subs, but Marwood came on for Thomas, so still only 4 on at the same time. Was there another match in 88 with 5 on at some point? The Euros in 88 only had 2 in the squad, Seaman and Adams.

There are some names playing for Engerland in 88 I had completely forgotten, including Ian Hendon Paul Mitchel Aiden Newhouse Daryl Sutch and Steve Bull (Bull only forgotten that he played for England  )

Sir Chips we need an answer

I am guessing he will of course claim as Thomases right foot was on the pitch just as Marwood had also stepped on the pitch there were 5 on at the same time :rubchin:

Nowhere in your original post was it explicit you meant 5 on the pitch at the same time. :D

:? :? Wriggling like a chipolata  , heading up at the start of the second half means heading out onto the pitch to do battle not heading up the subs bench

Either way makes me pleased, Im afraid I did used to squirm a bit when we fielded no English players in the English and Welsh league

There's a nice easy transition for me from England back to Arsenal in the champions league next week.....a reassurance that we switch from bullying San Marino to Anderlecht.....a reassurance that we'll qualify despite the odd wobble or two.....before a damn good rodding at the hands of the first decent side we play in the competition proper
