I think that's because he was at some point. Others who have watched the reserves years ago may know more; but I'm pretty sure he was coverted, a la Cashley.Sam59 wrote:I've always thought that Gibbs was a left sided midfielder masquerading as a FB, but for me he's good enough for this Arsenal team but wouldn't get into any other top side as a first choice FB. He leaves acres of space when he bombs forward at every opportunity - don't know if he's told to do this, or given free rein so thinks it's a good idea. Positionally suspect too. But better than he used to be, and probably could be a far better FB given proper defensive coaching. Even Clichy improved remarkably at City.
Debuchy is in his first season with us, and is coming back from injury, so give him some leeway guys. He's at least first choice FB for France, who have a decent side. (what a shame the Fool passed up on the opportunity to sign Lloris when he could have).

To be fair, Gibbs would probably look world class were he at a club that has a manager that had any kind of defensive tactics...

Re: Is Gibbs good enough
If we are to win the title then neither Gibbs nor Mertesacker should be starters.
We need a new left back and centre back.
But I doubt Bould is given enough time to coach the players so it is not all their fault, and I could see Gibbs improving at another club in the way Clichy has.

Re: Is Gibbs good enough
No, his consistency is not good enough. I am not a Gibbs fan, prefer Monreal and before that I preferred Traore, who I think got a b*m deal when Gibbs returned to fitness. Gibbs works very hard and all that creditable stuff, but he can only put in a few performances before getting injured again. Also, he never seems to have to really fight his way back into the team even if he's not on top form. If he's fit enough he seems to be automatically selected. Oh, and he's an England player - what a coincidence! Yes, perhaps I'm being a tad harsh, but he's such a sick note nearly every season and always seems to be in Wenger's pet project class. He's no youngster now and I can't see him improving beyond his current performances. I don't care if others say he's the 3rd best left back in the country, he's still not good enough for us and I can't see this changing. End of.

I think youre theonly person ive ever heard say that they prefer Monreal. Hes a coward and hes stealing a living as a footballer.
Re: Is Gibbs good enough
In a well structured team :- yes he is. The problem for him and for that matter Chambers when he is on the right there is no pivot to cover sideways in the central midfield. They both get exposed and caught out of position . Arteta does cover but is too slow to get from the middle to the corners in a fast counter attack. The whole thing comes down to the defensive midfielder doing the job the lack of which impacts on the two centre backs as well.

I understand that football is a game of opinions but to put that headless chicken Monreal ahead of Gibbs is a complete jokeRedsonja wrote:No, his consistency is not good enough. Re: Is Gibbs good enough
Gibbs' pace gets him out of trouble when he gets caught (quite often) out of position, but then again if he had a decent centre back to guide him through games he would become a more than decent full-back,but then again I haven't worked a day in footballnorthbank123 wrote:Baines is overrated but I dont think Gibbs is particularly more reliable defensively and undoubtedly offers less going forward. Good enough? No.
Our best LB? Yes.
He may have been good enough had he not be made out of paper but there it is...

Gibbs must be the only Full Back in the country who never actually scores any goals
