Re: Bad refereeing/ call for Mike fcking Riley to stand down
When Raheem Sterling had to put his arm around the head of a linesman to slap that Swansea player in the face and absolutely nothing was done about it (either retrospectively or at the time) then the concept of any form of competent officialling in this league died. Pathetic.

Always makes me laugh when you see a rugby ref giving a player a right bollocking, usually a bloke about 12 or 13 stone maybe 5'10" telling off someone twice his size and the rugby player looking sheepish...
Can you imagine any modern professional footballer ever looking sheepish or actually showing respect to a ref, mind you when the chance you can be binned for 10 mins for saying the wrong thing is a prospect i guess it makes a big difference.

I had hoped that the reason we haven't seen Lee Probert this season was because he had been dropped or suspended following his dreadful performance in the cup final bur we learned at the weekend he's had a back injury. He'll be returning imminently

Swings and roundabouts really because you then have complete thuggery. Like Dylan Hartley elbowing somebody in the jaw with minimal to no provocation and some people were genuinely amazed that the referee thought it warranted a red. Also I know that they punish it harshly but how often do footballers try and cause serious damage to somebody else's eye? Or stamp on/rake body parts.GoonerMuzz wrote:Always makes me laugh when you see a rugby ref giving a player a right bollocking, usually a bloke about 12 or 13 stone maybe 5'10" telling off someone twice his size and the rugby player looking sheepish...

I know your point was limited to respecting refs but believe me I hear enough about how fucking well rugby players conduct themselves and its a sore point.

Rugby (both codes) is a fast-paced, complicated game but there is respect for the ref and sensible use of video playback. games are not unduly delayed. Replays and retrospective action would improve behaviour in short order.

Nigel Owens probably the most respected Ref in Rugby at the moment.

I don't think anyone has suggested that rugby players conduct themselves well with regard to each other. I've the scars to prove it, but they do respect the referee and it makes a massive difference to the flow of the game.

Re: Bad refereeing/ call for Mike fucking Riley to stand dow
the refs pretty much are told what to do by the league - look at the fergie ref stats as an example - if a ref reffed a united defeat his average return time was TWO YEARS. otherwise it was 2-3 months.
football as we know is about TV rights, advertising and sponsorship - just like NBA.
see also the comments last year from the PL executive that MUFC being outside the top three 'hurts the EPL brand'.....the fact they are comfortable even saying that in public shows how much it is ingrained. and guess what ? - where are the mancs now ?????
if you had to imagine a nightmare EPL scenario, its that three small clubs with young gifted managers and relatively unknown players go 1-2-3 in the league and qualify for the CL pushing out the big brands - the PL and CL TV revenues and sponsorship would then plummet, as would their junkets and freebies.
as long as the EPL is a for-profit corporation, its going to game the system for its own profit. hence the professional refs.
any football fan knows that FIFA and UEFA are corrupt, well the EPL is completely hand in hand with them - the PL should be a non-profit equally owned by its 19 members. equally. in parity. sharing TV revenue and sponsorship equally.
i'm not suggesting the PL fixes games, no, but i think they let refs know what is in the interest of the league financially and the refs too.
does anyone really think that we'll see another Villa or Forest in the CL final in our lifetimes ? - maybe from another country, but from the PL ? no. they'd never allow it financially.

Re: Bad refereeing/ call for Mike fucking Riley to stand dow
Personally, I have no problem with technology in football (providing it works)
Offside decisions could easily be made using technology (sky do it within seconds already) and many wrong decisions would be avoided.
It is barmy that commentators, viewers have better access to see the action than the poor sod trying to referee the match.
I would love to see a referee able to review the match, prior to sending in his report, and say for example had he seen Rooney dive he would have booked him / sent him off and a retrospective ban be applied for cheating. Who knows it might even stop cheats, especially if the retrospective ban was more severe.
Refs also need desperately need to be held accountable directly after a match to give their reasons for decisions - they are costing teams points, which as we all know equates to big bucks in todays football and the wrong call can lead to relegation.

I know plenty of people who dis agree with you on the basis that rugby players "don't roll around on the floor" and shake hands at the end and its a gentlemens sport so it's all okay.GranadaJoe wrote:northbank123 wrote:Swings and roundabouts really because you then have complete thuggery. Can't we accept the guy in the middle? Why do we have to have certainty about everything and have everything uniform? Human mistakes by players and refs.

Nigel Owens has got cracking banter mind, he is genuinely a funny bloke.storrmin571 wrote:GranadaJoe wrote:Pl refs are not very good, but, imo, the 'blind' managers and cheating players get the refs they deserve. It's us that suffer.

To be fair I thought Clattenburg was funny (and justified) in tellig Lallana that hed changed since playing for England. The Southampton reaction to that was fucking pathetic, embarrassment.

Him calling Mata a "cheeky monkey" was also brilliant. They tried to do him on racism charges for that lolnorthbank123 wrote:Nigel Owens has got cracking banter mind, he is genuinely a funny bloke.storrmin571 wrote:GranadaJoe wrote:Pl refs are not very good, but, imo, the 'blind' managers and cheating players get the refs they deserve. This fucking lauding of towel-flicking soggy biscuit eating closet homosexuals (or rugby players as some of you call them) is bollocks. What type of "sporting gentleman" carries a fake blood capsule? Or agrees to have his lip cut by a team medic? Or accepts having a fat bloke's thumb rammed up his arse as part of a "sport"?
I quote the only sensible thing that ever came out of Noel Gallagher's mouth; Rugby is a nonsense of a sport.
