Only seen him play for The Arsenal on tapes, only remember him scoring the winner for West Ham against us in the cup and celebrated like it won the trophy. Never understood why he's held in greater esteem than David O'Leary who stuck with us when we were really crap?
I understand that he was quality but then so was Fabregas and everyone hates him for doing exactly the same. Didn't Brady leave on a free?

Apart from his all round quality it would be that goal away at the lane in the 5-0 demolition in 78, and being instrumental in the 79 cup final ( big, hand in all 3 goals ) that he is so fondly remembered.Nos89 wrote:Only seen him play for The Arsenal on tapes, only remember him scoring the winner for West Ham against us in the cup and celebrated like it won the trophy. Add in he came through the ranks and he was at the time Mr Arsenal.
I guess people didn't begrudge him his move abroad for the titles and money he would earn.
Nowadays he would get dogs abuse for having ambition.

Most fans delighted he did not go to Man united, who where after signing himStuartL wrote:Apart from his all round quality it would be that goal away at the lane in the 5-0 demolition in 78, and being instrumental in the 79 cup final ( big, hand in all 3 goals ) that he is so fondly remembered.Nos89 wrote:Only seen him play for The Arsenal on tapes, only remember him scoring the winner for West Ham against us in the cup and celebrated like it won the trophy. He was much more than those highlights as stated, he could control a game, fantastic range of passing, and could beat players with a drop of a shoulder....a great player
These lads from Dublin including O leary and Stapleton were paid extremely low wages compared to some of the players that were added to the squad
The fans loved him, that did not die when he left......

Agree with both Stuart and Red. Also, it was a time when true flair players were few and far between - particularly at The Arsenal. He was truly one of the greats as a player. Many fans of my generation remember him so fondly as a player because he was that bit of top top class we didn't have the way some of the other big clubs did.Redarmy wrote:Most fans delighted he did not go to Man united, who where after signing himStuartL wrote:Apart from his all round quality it would be that goal away at the lane in the 5-0 demolition in 78, and being instrumental in the 79 cup final ( big, hand in all 3 goals ) that he is so fondly remembered.Nos89 wrote:Only seen him play for The Arsenal on tapes, only remember him scoring the winner for West Ham against us in the cup and celebrated like it won the trophy. I remember those 3 Dublin guys coming into the team in 1974 along with one Wilf Rostron.
A defender, playmaker and CF.They were shining lights during a dark period.
