DROP ALMUNIA

Tell me how many times Given has played in a team as big as Arsenal?
It's very different to be keeper in a great team, you need to bee very focused during all the game because there's not a lot of things to do but 1 mistake and it's goal. When he played at Newcastle or with Ireland he did some great games, fantastic saves, but he's not a great keeper for me because he has never played in a big Club.

For fcuks sake vince almunia played for fcuking nobody until he became our number 1 at 31 years of age so how does that make him a good keeper ? :? :banghead:

I mean the mistakes Almunia did, I'm not convinced Given wouldn't do the same. He never played in a Club as big as Arsenal, so for me it's not a fact that Given is better than him. For me they are the same level.

Spot on.

Given and Almunia are not in the same league.

Almunia is a no 2 at best and always has been.

Vince I know that you have said previously that the concentration level of keepers is vital at a big club cos they wouldnt get as much to do in a game as say given would at newcastle but are you really telling me that almunia's mistakes are down to a lack of concentration or focus ?? I mean we are seeing an ongoing catalogue of the same mistakes the guy keeps making and unlike you I put that down to ability or lack of to be more precise. You can argue that given's concentration levels have never been tested at a big club but there is no way in world that you can tell me that almunia has anywhere near the same level of ability as given has and even those defending almunia on this thread have said that we should have bought given

Assuming we ever could have signed Given!

Would Newcastle have sold him to us before last season? and when they were willing to sell, could we have outbid Citeh??

If Given was available, then I agree he would have been worth a shot, but I don't think it's ever been certain that he was available to us!

Could we outbid Citeh? Given only cost 8m

Wages, not the fee.

I'm not sure that it was that much. I think Given had about a year left on his contract and Newcastle were happy to get what they could for him.

As far as I remember no one else bid for him, but that may have been down to Citeh doing their now customary 'we'll double/triple your current wages' enticement.

There are/were others we could have got who are more competent than Almunia. Brad Friedel is better in my opinion and Villa didn't break the bank to sign him either. Jaskelienen (sp) also commands his area better than Almunia. AW has a horror record picking keepers, Lehmann was far and away the best one and even he had serious issues.

 They are, but Given is at the better end whereas Almunia is at the worst end

Given's a typical overrated short arse keeper who looks flashy because he has to dive for shots other keepers don't have to but actually lets in more goals than they do because of his lack of inches.

The keeper we should have gone for, and he was available on a free, was Schwarzer when he left the Smoggies. I know we hate stats but fewest shots let in percentage wise last season tells its own story.

In the real world, I trust Almunia many times more than Flappy so unless there is a better keeper we can get on top of the outfield players we need over the next two days we have to keep him in.

To be a bit objectionable I think Irish fans tend to overrate Given. For my money, as far as Ireland goes, he's great in Qualifying stages of tourno's but when we do get to the next stage (WC 2002) I didnt really think he stood out tbh. Don't get me wrong, he an excellent keeper but you'd need to ask yourself at his early 30's why has no big team come in for him?

I know his brother, I always use to say to him Jens was a much better keeper!

That's my point.
