Is Gibbs good enough

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

He leaves acres of space when he bombs forward at every opportunity - don't know if he's told to do this, or given free rein so thinks it's a good idea. Positionally suspect too. But better than he used to be, and probably could be a far better FB given proper defensive coaching. Even Clichy improved remarkably at City.
Debuchy is in his first season with us, and is coming back from injury, so give him some leeway guys. He's at least first choice FB for France, who have a decent side. (what a shame the Fool passed up on the opportunity to sign Lloris when he could have).
I think that's because he was at some point. Others who have watched the reserves years ago may know more; but I'm pretty sure he was coverted, a la Cashley.

To be fair, Gibbs would probably look world class were he at a club that has a manager that had any kind of defensive tactics...

If we are to win the title then neither Gibbs nor Mertesacker should be starters.
We need a new left back and centre back.

But I doubt Bould is given enough time to coach the players so it is not all their fault, and I could see Gibbs improving at another club in the way Clichy has.

No, his consistency is not good enough. I am not a Gibbs fan, prefer Monreal and before that I preferred Traore, who I think got a b*m deal when Gibbs returned to fitness. Gibbs works very hard and all that creditable stuff, but he can only put in a few performances before getting injured again. Also, he never seems to have to really fight his way back into the team even if he's not on top form. If he's fit enough he seems to be automatically selected. Oh, and he's an England player - what a coincidence! Yes, perhaps I'm being a tad harsh, but he's such a sick note nearly every season and always seems to be in Wenger's pet project class. He's no youngster now and I can't see him improving beyond his current performances. I don't care if others say he's the 3rd best left back in the country, he's still not good enough for us and I can't see this changing. End of.

In a well structured team :- yes he is. The problem for him and for that matter Chambers when he is on the right there is no pivot to cover sideways in the central midfield. They both get exposed and caught out of position . Arteta does cover but is too slow to get from the middle to the corners in a fast counter attack. The whole thing comes down to the defensive midfielder doing the job the lack of which impacts on the two centre backs as well.

I understand that football is a game of opinions but to put that headless chicken Monreal ahead of Gibbs is a complete joke :banghead:

Baines is overrated but I dont think Gibbs is particularly more reliable defensively and undoubtedly offers less going forward. At internatiinal level Baines isnt good enough to utilise thisbut at club level its an asset.
Gibbs' pace gets him out of trouble when he gets caught (quite often) out of position, but then again if he had a decent centre back to guide him through games he would become a more than decent full-back,but then again I haven't worked a day in football
