To be fair, AFC Wimbledon have shown that it is possible to start from scratch and get a team into the football league inside a decade. Perhaps ****** Keynes could have tried that if they were that keen on having a professional team.

They sure have. And rushden did much the same thing before them. But then you look how difficult luton are finding it to get back in the league once they were out. Pete winkleman was investing so much money that he wanted more of a guaranteed return. Investing big sums in Newport town or wolverton would have been very high risk. And mk didn't have an obvious, successful, non-league team to do it with.... Would definitely have been better than effectively buying someone else's franchise though.... Mind you, a mate of mine is a season ticket holder there & there are several "original" wimbledon fans who sit near him & travel up from London each week.... I'm sure they prefer playing in a fantastic stadium in mk than going bust, which is the way they were heading at the time of the move!

same in '23 & again a few seasons back so why not call them "franchise" clubs as well as Chelsea who in 1905 were voted into the Football League BEFORE they played a game after Fulham declined a move to Stamford Bridge which is by Fulham Broadway!!!!

Fair point. Guess it depends how easy it would have been for the fans to follow. Maine road to city of Manchester stadium in today's world was ok. But my guess is that woolwich to highbury for a working man in the early 1900's would have been no easy journey.

Plenty of Sarf London Gooners still making the journey today so can't have been that hard

Trip into central London & a tube to Gillespie Road Underground. Same type of journey for United Fans from north west to south east through the centre of the city

Both clubs moved just far enough to keep their original core support, & then gain across their relative cities an increase in their gates & catchment areas.

Bit of a difference between "Franchise FC" & City, United, & Arsenal.

Chavski FC are a different case & much closer to the idea of a Franchise, voted into the league without
having been in the Southern or any other league beforehand
