Are Spurs fans allowed to sing what they want??

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

just though id add my two pen'orth

im Jewish and a massive Gooner, occasionally i refer to spurs as the '****' and have never had a problem with people who do because as far as im concerned its a nickname to equal 'gooner'.

Added to that is the often quoted fact that the scum describe themselves as the '**** army'

however if someone called me a **** in a non-footballing context then i would definately take offence and consider it racist - however i also know that some non-spurs supporting Jews do take offence at their religion being linked with such a despicably scummy little club, anyway, thats just my opinion for what its worth

That's what i'd say my stance is (though I am not Jewish). i do not condone racially motivated hate at all. Though i use the word ****, I would never make reference to the holocaust. Never. But I don't like this hair splitting over the issue.

After all, should jokes about Scotland and Wales be banned considering the atrocities that came to them with English dominance?

Well it isn't the equal of Gooner because Gooner is not a racial term

Another one done to death.

Most Spurs fans are not Jewish and whether they consider the term offensive or not is about as relevant as whether Al Jolson considers the word 'nigger' offensive. [/quote]

Well no it isn't the same

Scotland consented to English dominance with the act of Union in 1707 that merged both monarchies.

And neither the Scots or Welsh have had pseudo scientific theories of biological inferiority to the English, as the Jews have had in relatively recent times in a historical context.

And you also mention the gravity of the holocaust - English dominance over the Scots or Welsh never resulted in a comparable level of industrial slaughter.

that was my point - when used in a footballing/spurs context i dont consider it a racial term, hence it being the equal of Gooner and just a nickname

Not that I intended to. But is not officially a banned word and I see no problem in using it evey now and then.

Yeah but Ben it has not acquired a footbaling context in a social vacuum.

It only has a footballing context because of the racial make up of the area until about 30 years ago.

It would be like the word 'paki' attaining a footballing context today with regards to West Ham because of who lives in Upton Park

Well perhaps a little test case.

Go on Five Live and Talksport and refer to Spurs as the **** and see if they keep you on air.
