As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.
that was my point - when used in a footballing/spurs context i dont consider it a racial term, hence it being the equal of Gooner and just a nickname
Yeah but Ben it has not acquired a footbaling context in a social vacuum.
It only has a footballing context because of the racial make up of the area until about 30 years ago.
It would be like the word 'paki' attaining a footballing context today with regards to West Ham because of who lives in Upton Park
cus, fair enough, i only said it was my opinion so we will have to agree to disagree
for me this issue is a one-off thing and not really comparable - however, language evolves and words gain different meanings over time - gay used to mean happy, now some people find it offensive (and yes i know thats not a racial term) anyway im out and sorry to people whove had this subject done to death in the past, im an on/off reader of the forum
stearmaster - thats CLEARLY the best post on this thread HEHEHE

Well the word 'gay' isn't deemed offensive by it's subject group - it's what homosexuals generally prefer to be called by hetrosexuals.
Jewish people generally don't prefer to be called '****' by non-Jews.
And I think it is fair to say that the word has only changed it's meaning within English football circles, outside of this the word still means a term of offence.
ok fine then Cus- a better example of how language changed over time is the word faggot which used to refer to a bundle of wood used for burning people at the stake but is now used as an insulting word for homosexual people
"And I think it is fair to say that the word has only changed it's meaning within English football circles, outside of this the word still means a term of offence."
which is what i basically said in my first post and adds to the validity of it not being an offensive term if used in a certain context

I HAVE TO ADMIT THAT I FLINCHED WHEN I READ THAT - AND WHETHER YOU MEANT IT IN THAT CONTEXT OR NOT, IT IMMEDIATELY CONJURED UP SCENES OF NAZIS TO ME.
ALTHOUGH I HATE THE WHOLE PC BRIGADE, THE FACT THAT A LOT OF OUR FELLOW GOONERS - INCLUDING GOONER.ED - HAVE MADE IT CLEAR THEY WOULD RATHER NOT SEE THE USE OF THE 'Y' WORD ON THE FORUM, MEANS I MAKE AN EFFORT NOT TO USE IT ON HERE OUT OF CONSIDERATION FOR THEM. MIGHT BE A GOOD IDEA TO DO LIKEWISE.

Interesting example because the homosexual context was derived from exactly the same context you mentioned. From the gruesome medievel times when mobs burned homosexuals at the stake.

Yes but Ben not everybody is a follower of premiership football and not everyone has their life experience molded around premiership football, so the word '****' is still going to be as offensive as it always was.
And as I've pointed it only got its footballing context from its racist one
agree to disagree??? cus?
Ok fair enough.
In fact I myself would rather the online gooner forum was solely about football and not about politics and social issues - but if people use phrases such as '****' the forum is already dragged away from football and into such territory. [/quote]
augie wrote:That point was made many times during the whole debate over the Arsenal fans suing the club over fans using the y*d word. It was also mentioned when ferguscum complained bitterly in the media about the stick the *word censored* got at the emirates. Thing is I mostly dont blame the media or opposition fans but instead I blame our own club who bend over backwards at the slightest sign of offending even 1 person but wont fight for their own employees(wenger) by looking for sanctions against the likes of manure It is a disgrace that we announced that we were launching an enquiry into the abuse that drunk got at emirates - think that guy at the train station got the right idea myself
agree 100%
and as for the **** songs I have no problem with it apart from making gas sounds and to be honest 'we gotta get rid of the ****' does have nazi connotations. we hate the **** but we are not Nazis like the twats at chelsea who act like hooligans the go for a drink in the wine bars of Kew. ANTIFA all the way

Are you Hitler in disguise?
Seriously, a joke about a historical genocide of a people is never acceptable. Use your brain next time, think how something could be construed (like say, supporting a horrible genocide), who it could hurt and then think if you really have to say it.
Not that I intended to. But is not officially a banned word and I see no problem in using it evey now and then.
It is from the fanzine and articles posted, just the moderators do not have the time to do it on the forum.
The next time this sort of argument comes up can a moderator just delete it? I'm sick of all the "this is racist", "well I don't think so", "Yes it is", "No its not", "its rude, people find it offensive" type bickering that eventuates from it....
